The Gate assisted stretch – derived from Parighasana
Performed by Ananta Sylvain Girard at Iyengar Studio – São Paulo 2008
Inspired by modern yoga and the Guruji BKS Iyengar style of yoga, the AYM method uses specific assisted stretches based on concentric, eccentric or isometric movement patterns. The manoeuvres are carried out in complete safety thanks to precise positioning, adjustments, supports and wedging systems. The AYM practitioner is simultaneously the one who stretches, supports and resists to assist the posture. In performing the portal pose, the giver uses the body to give secure support, similar to props (wall, chair, brick or straps) during the Iyengar yoga practice. Similarly, the AYM therapist simultaneously pulls and pushes, providing supporting and stretching forces. The combination of support and stretch releases some of the antagonistic muscle resistance constantly reacting in a yogasana practice. That way, it allows the body to stretch over its usual capacity increasing fluids circulation and flexibility.
